Clacton Pier is a large amusement pier on the Essex coast, the first pier built in the new resort of Clacton-on-Sea. It is packed with fairground rides, a roller rink, amusements and dining, making it one of the most entertainment-heavy piers in England.
The story of Clacton Pier
The pier was opened in 1871, designed by Edward H. Pickering and built by the Clacton-on-Sea Pier and Harbour Company as a promenade and landing stage for steamers from London. It was the first structure of the new resort, which was laid out by Peter Bruff on farmland. The pier was extended in 1893 and a pier pavilion added in 1901, later replaced by a theatre. The pier was sectioned in the Second World War and the pier head was rebuilt in the postwar years. A major redevelopment in the 1990s added the current fairground rides and a large indoor leisure complex.
Visiting with care
Open year-round, the pier is one of the most ride-heavy in the country with a roller coaster, helter-skelter and indoor roller rink. It is at the heart of Clacton's seafront and is busiest in the summer season with special events and fireworks.
