About Penarth Pier
Penarth Pier is a Grade II listed Art Deco pier pavilion on the South Wales coast, overlooking the Bristol Channel. Its elegant white pavilion is a local landmark and houses a cinema, café and event space.
The story of Penarth Pier
The pier was opened in 1895, designed by H. F. Edwards and built by the Penarth Promenade and Landing Company as a promenade and steamer landing stage. The original pier was a simple wooden deck, but in 1929 a striking Art Deco pavilion designed by W. C. Crouch was added at the shoreward end, hosting dances and variety shows. The pier was damaged by fire in 1931 and again in 1948, with the latter destroying the pier head. The Art Deco pavilion survived and was restored by the Vale of Glamorgan Council in 2013 as a cinema and community venue. The pier was Grade II listed in 1976.
Visiting with care
Open year-round, the pier's Art Deco pavilion houses an independent cinema, a café and event space. It is at the end of Penarth's Italianate esplanade, with views across the Bristol Channel and easy access to the Cardiff Bay Barrage footpath.
