Bognor Regis Pier is a shortened Victorian pier on the West Sussex coast, now a smaller amusement venue after years of storm damage. It retains a shoreward pavilion with amusements and a club at the pier head.
The story of Bognor Regis Pier
The pier was opened in 1865, designed by Sir John Rennie and built by the Bognor Regis Pier Company, originally extending 1,000 feet. The pier was badly damaged by a storm in 1889 that washed away the landing stage, and further storms in 1902, 1908 and 1964 progressively shortened the structure. A pavilion was built at the pier head in 1901 but was lost in the 1964 storm, leaving just a short stub. The remaining pier was redeveloped with an amusement arcade and the pier head converted into a nightclub, which later became a family entertainment venue.
Visiting with care
Open year-round, the pier is now a compact amusement venue with arcades, a club and a restaurant. It is on Bognor Regis's seafront, convenient for the town centre and the beach, and is said to be one of the sunniest piers in England.
