About Teignmouth Pier

Teignmouth Pier is a Victorian amusement pier on the South Devon coast, a compact structure with a theatre, amusement arcade and children's rides. It sits at the mouth of the River Teign and is a central feature of the town's seafront.

The story of Teignmouth Pier

The pier was opened in 1867, designed by J. D. Drew and built by the Teignmouth Pier Company as a promenade and landing pier. At 670 feet, it was shorter than many of its Victorian peers but served the paddle steamer excursion trade along the South Devon coast. A pavilion was added at the pier head in 1909 for variety shows and dances. The pier was damaged by fire in 1909, just after the pavilion was built, and was rebuilt. It was further damaged by storms in 1937 and 1975 but each time repaired and remains a traditional amusement pier today.

Visiting with care

Open year-round, the pier offers traditional amusements and a small theatre with seasonal shows. It is in the heart of Teignmouth's seafront, convenient for the town's sandy beach and the promenade along the River Teign.
