About Bardsey Lighthouse
Bardsey Lighthouse stands on Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli), off the tip of the Llŷn Peninsula, and is the tallest square-towered lighthouse in Wales. It guides vessels through the treacherous waters of Bardsey Sound, one of the most notoriously difficult passages off the Welsh coast.
The story of Bardsey Lighthouse
The lighthouse was built in 1821 by Joseph Nelson for Trinity House, its square tower rising 30 metres above the island's southern tip — unusually tall for a square design. Bardsey Island was a medieval religious site known as the "Island of 20,000 Saints" and burial place of early Welsh Christians. The lighthouse was automated in 1982, the last resident keepers leaving the island. The light was converted to solar power in 2014 and continues to mark the dangerous tide races of Bardsey Sound.
Visiting with care
Bardsey Island is reached by a small ferry from Aberdaron during the summer months, weather permitting. The crossing itself passes through Bardsey Sound, and the island offers walks to the lighthouse, a medieval abbey and rich wildlife including Manx shearwaters and choughs.
